Using WORD to make a GANTT chart There are two ways of doing this. One is to use tables and the other is to use text boxes. Gantt Charts using Tables| Activities | May | June | July | Aug | Sept | Oct | Nov | Dec | | Decide on TQM Kick-Start | X | | | | | | | | | Steering group Chosen | X | X | | | | | | | | Start Staff Climate Survey | | | | | | | | | | Steering group Trained | | | | | | | | | | Start Customer Surveys | | | | | | | | | | Visits to other companies | | | | | | | | | | Staff Climate Survey Complete | | | | | | | | | | Train Other Managers | | | | | | | | | | Complete Awareness Training | | | | | | | | | | Facilitators Trained | | | | | | | | | | 10 QATs formed & working
A template for this is in Template Word Gantt 1 - This approach uses the WORD tables. It is best to activate the Tables and Borders toolbar by going to View, Toolbars, and clicking Tables and orders.
- To use the template, Change the months to suit the project and type in the activities to be carried out
- To create a table from fresh, go to insert a table in your document and adjust as in the example below.
- For each activity, colour the appropriate cells using the Fill tool in the Tables and Borders toolbar above.
- You can then create a simple Gantt chart similar to the one shown below.
- Copy it and paste it into your project plan
Gantt Charts using Text BoxesGantt Chart | | | May | June | July | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec | Jan
A template for this is in Template Word Gantt 2. To create the above: - Go to the "Table" menu, select "Insert Table", and create a table of 9 columns (the number of months needed) by 2 rows.
- The first row is the heading. Type in the months May to Jan making each "Bold". Then select the whole row and select grey from "Shading Colour" in the Tables toolbar.
- Then resize the second row to the depth shown. (Cursor over the bottom line of the second row until it changes to a resizing cursor and then drag the line down).
- Then create the text boxes with text and colouring as described on the previous page for STAGES. Stretch each to represent the time needed for that activity and drag them around the chart to put them in place.
