Detailed Description of Word Drawing Tools

Drawing Tools

  • All of this is best done with the Drawing tools.
  • First make sure that the Drawing toolbar is active by going to the View menu, putting the cursor over Toolbars and ensuring that there is a tick against Drawing.

Drawing Text Boxes

  • Text Box LogoClick on the Text Box in the Drawing toolbar (portrait box with an in it)
    and the cursor should change to a cross.
  • Place this over the page, hold down the left mouse button and draw your box.
  • Click on the box and type your heading in the box.

Re-Sizing & Moving Text Boxes

  • You may need to resize the box. First select it by clicking on the edge to get the handles to appear. Resizing Handles
  • Then putting the cursor over the handles until the cursor changes to a double headed arrow, and then left clicking and dragging the handles until the box is the right size.
  • To move the text box, click the cursor on the edge to get until the symbol appears.
  • If you now hold the left mouse button down you can drag the textbox around the page to a new position.

Formatting Text Boxes

  • Place the cursor over the text box and click the Right Mouse Button. You should get the following Menu appearing. If not keep trying.

  • Click on Format Text Box and you should get a menu which will allow you to change the properties of the text box for
    • Colours and Lines
    • Size
    • Position
    • Wrapping
    • And Text Box
  • Colours & Lines enables you to change the colours of the text box fill and the border lines.
  • Position - best to have a tick in the box headed "Move Object with text".
  • Wrapping - I find it generally best to chose "Top and Bottom" - it makes the test flow around the text box.
  • However - if you are placing text boxes over a table the the wrapping must be set at None.

Colouring a Text Box

  • Use "Format Text Box" as above and under colours and lines select the desired "Fill Colour".

Arrows

  • One option is to go to "AutoShapes" in the Drawing Toolbox, click on the mini arrow head, and go to "Block Arrows". Click on the appropriate arrow and your cursor should change to a
  • Left-click the mouse button and draw your arrow.
  • Format it as with a "Text Box" by selecting it and right clicking to get the menu

    Right Click Menu 
  • Click on "Format AutoShape" and proceed as described above for "Text Boxes".
  • Alternatively, select an arrow from the "Drawing Toolbar" and simply draw one.

Tables

  • First make sure that the Tables toolbar is active by going to the View menu, putting the cursor over Toolbars and ensuring that there is a tick against Tables and Borders.
  • To insert a table simply go to "Table" on the WORD menu, select "Inset Table", choose the number of columns and rows that you require and click OK.
  • To shade a row, simply select the row by putting the cursor in a cell, hold down the left mouse button, and drag the cursor over the columns or rows that you wish to select. Having selected a row, right click to get a menu
  • Select "Borders and Shading" and then select the shading you want for the cells.

To Resize a Table/Cell

  • Move the cursor over the bottom line of the cell that you want to resize.
